HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — John Mayer spoke out on his recent breakup with Jennifer Aniston over the weekend, telling reporters he's sorry if the reasoning behind the split isn't "interesting."
"People are different, they have different chemistry, they have different lives," the 30-year-old singer explained. "It's not about years, it's about going out with somebody, being truthful on the way in, being truthful in the middle and being truthful on the way out."
"I ended a relationship to be alone because I don't want to waste somebody's time if something's not right," he added. "I don't waste people's time."
News of the split broke in tabloids last week. The couple had been nearly inseparable since going public with their relationship in April, with the 39-year-old Aniston becoming a fixture on her former beau's concert tour.
Many had speculated that an engagement was forthcoming, perhaps even before the actress started promoting her upcoming film "Management," which is due in theaters on Sept. 19.
"Jennifer Aniston is the smartest, most sophisticated person I think I've ever met," Mayer said of his ex. "She's one of the most lovely people I've ever met in my life."
