HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — John Mayer has historically bashed the paparazzi, so one must wonder if he was seeking some publicity when he decided to challenge them to dig up his mugshot.
Late Wednesday, the 31-year-old singer disclosed that he had a criminal past in a message posted on his Twitter page.
"I was arrested for the same offense as Patrick Stump," Mayer tweeted about the Fall Out Boy singer who was arrested Tuesday on a two-year-old warrant for driving without a valid license. "It's the lamest answer to the question 'why you in here?' "
Mayer then presented a challenge for the king of celebrity dirt Harvey Levin to come up with his mugshot.
"If Harvey Levin at TMZ can produce my mugshot, I will donate 25k to the charity of his choice," he tweeted. "Who else is in? Harvey is Freedom of Information Act King."
As it turns out, the challenge was a rather simple one for both Levin and the Web site The Smoking Gun, who each produced Mayer's mugshot by the afternoon.
Mayer was arrested on May 26, 2001 for driving with a suspended license in Atlanta. The case was dismissed the following month.
