HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Jon Hamm is still wildly in love with longtime girlfriend Jennifer Westfeldt, but don't expect him to get married anytime soon.
"I don't have the marriage chip, and neither of us have the greatest examples of marriages in our families," the 39-year-old actor reveals in Sunday's Parade magazine. "But Jen is the love of my life, and we've already been together four times longer than my parents were married."
The couple, who began dating in 1997, also don't have any plans for children.
"I like kids but I also like the option to close the door," Hamm explained. "Becoming a parent is a whole other life, and it doesn't stop."
Hamm says his zest for life comes from losing both of his parents far too soon. His mother, Deborah, died from cancer when he was 10, and his father, Dan - the inspiration behind his Mad Men alter ego Don Draper - died 10 years later.
"Losing both parents at a young age gave me a sense that you can't really control life – so you'd better live it while it's here," he said. "I stopped believing in a storybook existence a long time ago. All you can do is push in a direction and see what comes of it."
