HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Kanye West was arrested early Thursday after getting into a scuffle with the paparazzi at Los Angeles International Airport.
According to TMZ, West and his manager, Don Crowley became upset at a photographer who was taking pictures and proceeded to smash his camera. A second altercation then ensued when the pair became upset with a TMZ staffer who was videotaping the incident. The TMZ cameraman claims Crowley "grabbed [his] camera, ripped off the mic and viewfinder and smashed it to the ground."
Marshall Lowe, a spokesperson for LAX, tells The Associated Press that West and Crowley had yet to reach the security screening area when the altercation began around 8 a.m. The singer and his road manager were scheduled to fly to Honolulu, Hawaii when they were detained.
Both West and Crowley were booked for felony vandalism.
An eyewitness at the scene told AP that West was "attacked" and simply trying to defend himself.
"I just don't see why he was arrested," said witness Charles Davis. "The man just put the camera too close to his face. I don't blame him."
West, who performed at Sunday night's MTV Video Music Awards, was released at 12:53 p.m. after posting a $20,000 bail.
