HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Katy Perry made quite the connection when she first met her future fiancé, British comedian Russell Brand.
"I was 25, 30 feet away from him. And I threw the bottle straight at him. Hit him smack dab on the head," the 25-year-old pop star recalls in the August issue of Esquire. "Can you imagine the horrible feeling he had, when he was used to getting everything he wanted? I was like, 'You've met your match.' "
Despite the unconventional intro, Perry says she immediately new the twosome were a perfect match.
"I'm like, 'Oh my God, I am you. You are me,' " she says. "[We are] two divas in one house."
"It's like splitting the atom: it shouldn't happen," adds the "California Gurls" singer.
The pair got started dating last fall and got engaged month later over the New Year's Eve holiday. Perry enjoys taking credit for taming for beau's admitted wild past, which included both sex and drug addictions.
"He used to basically be a professional prostitute – now he's not," she says. "He's an extremist, which can be both good and bad. I always needed someone stronger than me and I am, like, a f---ing strong elephant of a woman. I say that hopefully in the humblest way I can."
