HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Kelly Clarkson's Self cover is causing quite the stir after the magazine did some drastic retouching.
The controversial cover photo shows a much slimmer-looking Clarkson, a move that Self editor-in-chief Lucy Danziger explains was meant to allow the pop star to "look her personal best" on the September issue.
"Yes. Of course we do retouching," Danziger shares in her blog. "We correct color and other aspects of the digital pictures we take and then publish the best version we can."
"Did we alter her appearance? Only to make her look her personal best," she continues. "Did we publish an act of fiction? No. Not unless you think all photos are that."
Danziger goes into great detail about the magazine's process for the cover portrait, while sharing that the goal with Clarkson was to capture the singer's "amazing spirit." From that standpoint, Danziger argues that the magazine hit a home run with the former "American Idol" star.
"I think this photo is the truest we have ever put out there on the newsstand," she says.
While Clarkson's weight may be a hot topic in the tabloids, it certainly isn't ruffling her feathers.
"When people talk about my weight, I'm like, 'You seem to have a problem with it; I don't. I'm fine!,' " Clarkson tells the mag.
"I'm never trying to lose weight — or gain it," she adds. "I'm just being!"
