NEW YORK — Kiefer Sutherland was charged with misdemeanor assault Thursday for allegedly headbutting a fashion designer at a New York City nightclub.
The "24" star surrendered to authorities around 4 p.m. after getting into an altercation with Jack McCollough of the Proenza Schouler fashion house early Tuesday at an after-party for the Met Costume Institute Gala. The pair exchanged words at the trendy club SubMercer, located at SoHo's Mercer Hotel, after McCollough reportedly bumped into Brooke Shields. Sutherland was speaking with the actress at the time and allegedly headbutted the designer when tempers escalated.
The 42-year-old Sutherland was released by early evening. He is due back in court on June 22.
Sutherland could be facing more trouble when he returns to Los Angeles. The actor has two prior DUI offenses, the second of which resulted in him famously serving 48 days in jail last year. It is possible that he could serve additional jail time for violating his current five-year probation term.
"I'm very disappointed in myself for the poor judgment I exhibited recently, and I'm deeply sorry for the disappointment and distress this has caused my family, friends and co-workers on '24,' " he said after his second DUI arrest in 2007.
