HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Kiefer Sutherland has broken his silence after being arrested last week for allegedly headbutting a fashion designer at a New York City nightclub.
"We are troubled by the untruthful and self-serving information circulating regarding Kiefer Sutherland and events of last Monday evening," the actor's attorney, Michael C. Miller, said in a statement Monday to People. "We are confident, however, that the investigation being conducted by the Manhattan District Attorney's Office and the NYPD will confirm that Kiefer Sutherland was neither the instigator nor a wrongdoer in this incident."
Miller added that "out of respect for this law enforcement process," Sutherland "will not be making any comment."
The "24" star was charged with misdemeanor assault last Thursday after getting into an altercation with Jack McCollough of the Proenza Schouler fashion house. The pair exchanged words at an after-party for the Met Costume Institute Gala after McCollough reportedly bumped into Brooke Shields. Sutherland was speaking with the actress at the time and allegedly headbutted the designer when tempers escalated.
After the incident, a rep for Shields hinted to TMZ.com that Sutherland may have been out of line, but her attorney also issued a statement Monday downplaying those comments.
"A number of statements have been attributed to Ms. Shields in the media that are neither true nor authorized," said lawyer Gerald Lefcourt. "These statements were obviously made by those who were not in attendance at the party and constitute their version of events."
"While at the party she was bumped into by Jack McCollough and Kiefer Sutherland became concerned," the statement continued. "Kiefer has always been a gentleman in her company. Both Jack and Kiefer are friends of Ms. Shields and she regrets this unfortunate situation."
Sutherland is due back in court on June 22.
