HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Kirsten Dunst is breaking her silence on her rehab stint earlier this year at the Cirque Lodge treatment center in Utah.
"I didn't go to Cirque Lodge for alcohol abuse or drug abuse," the 26-year-old actress tells E! Online. "I went there for depression."
Dunst, who is currently shooting the feature film "All Good Things" in New York, said she wrestled with the decision to seek help for a good six months.
"I was struggling, and I had the opportunity to go somewhere and take care of myself," Dunst explains. "I was fortunate to have the resources to do it. My friends and family thought it was a good idea, too."
Best known for her role in the 1994 film "Interview with the Vampire," in which she received a Golden Globe nomination, as well as for her portrayal of Mary Jane Watson in the "Spider-Man" film series, Dunst said she wanted to set the record straight.
"There's been a lot of misrepresentation about what is going on in my life, and it's been very painful for my friends and family," she says. "Everyone feels like they have to defend me. They hear the rumors, and it puts them in a defensive position. Now that I'm feeling stronger, I was prepared to say something."
"Depression is pretty serious and should not be gossiped about," she adds.
That includes fabricated stories about her love life, in which Dunst says, "I am not dating Ryan Gosling!"
The young star's next film, the comedy "How to Lose Friends & Alienate People," is slated for release later this year.
