HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Laura Linney is taking a shot at series television.
The Oscar nominee will star in a new Showtime program about a woman with cancer, the network revealed Thursday.
Linney will portray a suburban mom dealing with the emotional ups and downs of a cancer fight. Despite the serious tone, the half-hour series is being billed as a comedy.
"She will no doubt make this character both heartbreaking and disarmingly funny, and we're thrilled that she has chosen this show for her foray into series television," Robert Greenblatt, Showtime's president of entertainment, said in a statement.
"How one lives fully while being tested by the unpredictability of life, and what one learns in the process, is always filled with endless possibility for an actor," added Linney, who will also executive produce the program. "I am very excited to tackle such potentially rich, funny and complicated material."
The 45-year-old actress has been nominated for an Oscar three times, including for the 2007 movie "The Savages"
Linney has also earned Emmy Awards for "Frasier," Wild Iris," and most recently, the HBO miniseries "John Adams."
