NEW YORK — Lil Wayne was finally sentenced Monday to a year in jail after several delays extended his freedom.
In October, the 27-year-old rapper pleaded guilty to felony gun possession in a plea deal with prosecutors. Police stopped the Grammy winner's tour bus in New York City after a concert performance on July 22, 2007, resulting in the discovery of a loaded .40 caliber semi-automatic gun. Authorities later used a DNA profiling technique to tie him to the gun found on the bus.
Lil Wayne will serve his sentence at Rikers Island in New York City. With good behavior, he could be out of prison in eight months.
The "Lollipop" singer had his sentencing postponed twice in the past month – first so he could have dental work done, and last week as a result of a fire in the courthouse basement.
Lil Wayne recently told Rolling Stone that he would continue working despite being locked up.
"I'll be still rapping in there, have a gang of raps ready when I come back home," he said.
