HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Mackenzie Phillips is sharing a secret that she's kept hidden for 31 years and it's quite a doozy — she and her father, musician John Phillips of the Mamas and the Papas, had sex over an extended period of time in which they were both battling drug addictions.
In her new tell-all book "High on Arrival," due out Wednesday, the former child star reveals that she had sex with her father the night before her 1979 wedding to Jeff Sessler, a member of the Rolling Stones entourage.
"On the eve of my wedding, my father showed up, determined to stop it," writes Phillips, who was 19 at the time. "I had tons of pills, and Dad had tons of everything too. Eventually I passed out on Dad's bed."
"My father was not a man with boundaries," continues the former "One Day at a Time" star. "He was full of love, and he was sick with drugs. I woke up that night from a blackout to find myself having sex with my own father."
"Had this happened before? I didn't know," she says. "All I can say is it was the first time I was aware of it."
Phillips will discuss the revelation on Wednesday's "Oprah Winfrey Show," in addition to revealing details about the time Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger tried to seduce her.
The now 49-year-old Phillips first gained notoriety in the 1973 film "American Graffiti." She would soon rise to stardom on "One Day at a Time," in which she played the boy-crazy teenager Julie Cooper Horvath. During the show's third season in 1977, Phillips was arrested for public drunkenness and possession of cocaine. She was fired from the series three years later.
