LOS ANGELES — Actress Mackenzie Phillips was arrested Wednesday for alleged drug possession at Los Angeles International Airport, the Los Angeles Times reports.
According to the paper, the 48-year-old Phillips was arrested around 10 a.m. during a routine baggage screening when Transportation Security Administration officials allegedly found both heroin and cocaine in her possession.
"During a secondary screening process she was found in possession of what appeared to about a small amount of heroin and cocaine," Los Angeles Airport Police Sgt. Jim Holcomb tells the Times. "She was arrested for possession of a controlled substance, a felony, and transported to the airport station."
The star's first major acting role was at the age of 14 when she appeared in the role of "Carol" in the 1973 film classic, "American Graffiti." Her career skyrocketed in the 1970s and 1980s, when she was best known as Bonnie Franklin's rebellious, boy-crazed elder daughter, Julie Cooper Horvath, on the long-running television show "One Day at a Time."
Phillips, whose past substance abuse has been well-publicized, is the daughter of the late John Phillips, who rose to fame with The Mamas & The Papas. She is also the half-sister of singer Chynna Phillips and actress Bijou Phillips.
