HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Madonna's biceps are all the rage on the Web with many fitness experts chiming in on the singer's health.
Recent photos show the 50-year-old pop star with bulging arms and sinewy veins that have caused several to question whether Madonna is following proper protocol when it comes to diet and exercise.
"Oftentimes when your body fat is really, really, low, as Madonna's is, you're going to see veins pop," Leslie Bonci, director of sports nutrition at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, tells ABC News of the controversial pictures. "Her body fat is minimal, and she does a lot of strength training workouts that are going to build her muscles to look more visible."
"When muscles look that way, it's often the result of pretty restrictive eating and dehydration," she added, while pointing out that Madonna's veins mimic the look bodybuilders seek heading into a competition.
Madonna's biceps are believed to be the result of two-hour workouts, six days a week in an effort to maintain her youthfulness. However, while the singer's dedication to working out has long been admired, Bonci warned that Madonna could be in danger if she doesn't manage her fluids.
"With bodybuilders, the goal is to be sinewy, to make everything stand out," she explained. "How do you get to that goal? You restrict your fluid intake. But then you might collapse on stage."
