HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Maura Tierney has revealed that she will undergo surgery to remove a breast tumor.
The 44-year-old actress released a statement today after NBC announced on Friday that production on Tierney's new series, "Parenthood," would be halted for eight weeks as she sought treatment for an undisclosed medical condition.
"In an effort to guard my privacy, it seems that the wording of NBC's press release has unfortunately caused some confusion and undue alarm about my health," Tierney said a statement. "I have discovered a tumor in my breast which requires surgery. I will not know either my exact diagnosis or course of treatment until that surgery is performed."
"My doctors have all assured me this is a very treatable condition," the statement continued. "I'm very optimistic as to the outcome and want to thank everyone who has sent positive thoughts and support. I look forward to going back to work soon."
Tierney will play a financially-strapped single mom on "Parenthood," a take-off of the 1989 film of the same name. The star-studded cast also includes Peter Krause, Craig T. Nelson, Dax Shepard, Bonnie Bedlia, Monica Pottter and Erika Christensen.
Michelle Trachtenberg's new nursing drama, "Mercy," will take the place of "Parenthood" on NBC's fall schedule.
