HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Mel Gibson's comeback attempt in The Hangover 2 has come to a screeching halt.
The 54-year-old actor's planned cameo in the sequel has been called off after his appearance was met with resistance, director Todd Phillips said Thursday.
"I thought Mel would have been great in the movie and I had the full backing of [Warner Bros. president] Jeff Robinov and his team," Phillips told The Hollywood Reporter in a statement. "But I realize filmmaking is a collaborative effort, and this decision ultimately did not have the full support of my entire cast and crew."
Phillips didn't reveal who objected to Gibson being cast in the film, which reunites Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms and Zack Galifianakis, the man who reportedly objected to the Braveheart star the most.
Gibson's career went into a tailspin earlier this year after he was allegedly caught on tape ranting at his ex-girlfriend, Oksana Grigorieva.
