HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Mira Sorvino and her husband, Christopher Backus, have welcomed a healthy new baby son following a complicated pregnancy that threatened the lives of both the actress and her child.
Holden Paul Terry Backus, the couple's third child, was born on June 22 in Los Angeles, weighing in at 8 lbs., 12 oz. Prior to the birth, Sorvino endured several pregnancy complications, including placenta previa that led to her being put on bed rest and hospitalized for weeks.
"I developed a blood clot (DVT) due to all the inactivity and had to be anti-coagulated for months to prevent a pulmonary embolism," the "Mighty Aphrodite" star told People.
Sorvino also endured a challenging labor day as the couple's son was delivered a few weeks early.
"During the day we had some scary difficulties with the epidural as I achieved almost no progress with the labor and then at night the placenta created problems again," she told the mag. "Although it was not blocking the baby's path as it had done for almost the entire pregnancy, it started causing me a substantial loss of blood. Just as we began begging for a C-section, the situation turned around and the end of the birth was very easy."
Sorvino, 41, and Backus, 27, married at a Santa Barbara, Calif. courthouse in 2004 before holding a second ceremony in Italy. They are also proud parents to a 4-year-old daughter named Mattea and a 3-year-old son named Johnny.
Sorvino said the pregnancy complications were forgotten as soon as she held her newest addition.
"As soon as they placed him in my arms I knew it had all been worth it," she said. "He is my miracle baby. With everything that threatened this pregnancy and both of our lives, he came out of it completely unscathed: perfectly healthy, beautiful and wonderful!"
