JACKSON, Miss — Morgan Freeman is keeping his head up after being seriously injured in a car accident late Sunday night in Mississippi.
"He has a broken arm, broken elbow and minor shoulder damage but he is in good spirits," the Oscar-winning actor's rep, Donna Lee, said in a statement Monday. "He is going to have surgery this afternoon or tomorrow to correct the damage. He says he'll be okay and is looking forward to a full recovery."
The 71-year-old star was driving a 1997 Nissan Maxima that belonged to Demaris Meyer of Memphis at the time of crash, which happened around midnight on Mississippi Highway 32. The vehicle went off the road and rolled over several times before coming to a stop, Mississippi Highway Patrol spokesman Sgt. Ben Williams told the Associated Press.
Emergency crews used the jaws of life to remove Freeman and Meyer, who were both airlifted to the Regional Medical Center in Memphis, Tenn.
Freeman, who lives in Mississippi with his wife, won an Academy Award for the 2004 film "Million Dollar Baby," in which he starred alongside Hilary Swank and Clint Eastwood. Other notable film credits include "The Shawshank Redemption," "Driving Miss Daisy" and the current box-office smash "The Dark Knight."
Despite his injuries, Freeman was reportedly joking with rescue personnel. Clay McFerrin, editor of the Sun Sentinel in Charleston, said the star cracked a joke when one of the many bystanders at the scene attempted to snap a photo using a camera phone.
"No freebies, no freebies," McFerrin told AP of the actor's response.
