LEWISTON, Maine — Patrick Dempsey, the neurosurgeon known as Dr. McDreamy on ABC's medical drama "Grey's Anatomy," returned to his roots Monday to announce a new center designed to help cancer patients.
The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing in Lewiston, Maine, the actor's hometown, will offer education and support programs for cancer patients and their families.
While the center bears the actor's name, it was inspired by his mother, Amanda Dempsey, who has been treated for ovarian cancer three times and now lives cancer-free.
"For a family to get a cancer diagnosis is devastating, and all the information out there can be overwhelming," the 42-year-old Dempsey told reporters.
"A lot of the Web sites I went to just didn't have enough information," he continued. "So I talked to my sister about a place where people could go for all this type of information and help. Knowledge is power."
Dempsey's sister, Mary Dempsey, is an employee at the hospital and will serve as the coordinator of the center, which is scheduled to open March 31.
