HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Brad Pitt is speaking out for the first time about the tabloid showdown involving his current squeeze Angelina Jolie and his ex-wife Jennifer Aniston.
The ping-pong match began when Jolie spoke about how she couldn't wait to go to work with Pitt when the pair worked together on "Mr. & Mrs. Smith." Jolie was also quoted as saying that she couldn't wait to show the film to her six children with Pitt, since that was when the pair "fell in love."
Since Pitt was married to Aniston at the time, the former "Friends" called the comments "uncool" when she was asked about them in the November issue of Vogue. However, Pitt insists that the catfight is simply the media trying to stir up the pot.
"Listen, man, Jen is a sweetheart," the 45-year-old actor reveals in the February issue of W magazine. "I think she got dragged into that one, and then there's a second round to all of that Angie versus Jen. It's so created."
"What people don’t understand is that we filmed ['Mr. & Mrs. Smith'] for a year,” he continued. "We were still filming after Jen and I split up. Even then it doesn't mean that there was some kind of dastardly affair. There wasn't. I'm very proud of the way that it was handled. It was respectful. [The film] will mean something to our kids. It will, that's all."
As for his relationship with Aniston now, Pitt tells the mag there are no ill feelings to be had.
"We still check in with each other," admits the "Curious Case of Benjamin Button" star. "She was a big part of my life, and me hers. I don't see how there cannot be [that]. That's life, man. That's life."
