HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Sean Penn is taking a leave of absence.
The 48-year-old actor has dropped out of two major film projects and plans to focus on his family for the time being, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The news comes just months after Penn filed for a legal separation from his wife, actress Robin Wright Penn. The Oscar winner later withdrew his April filing, calling it an "arrogant mistake."
The "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" star also previously filed for divorce in December 2007, but the couple reconciled and stopped those divorce proceedings in April 2008.
Penn has notified Peter and Bobby Farrelly that he is withdrawing from their highly-anticipated movie "The Three Stooges," in which he was slated to co-star alongside Jim Carrey and Benecio del Toro. It's possible that the Farrellys will wait for Penn, but that could be at the expense of losing Carrey and/or del Toro, the trade publication said. Shooting on the film had been targeted to begin in August.
Also dropped from Penn's schedule is the crime thriller "Cartel," which is already moving forward with plans to recast his role.
In February, Penn won his second Academy Award for Best Actor, earning the Oscar for his performance in "Milk."
Penn and his 43-year-old wife have two children — daughter Dylan Francis, 18, and son Hopper Jack, 15.
