HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Shrek Forever After easily claimed the top spot at the weekend box office with a $71.3 million debut, according to initial estimates released Sunday.
The opening victory, however, was the weakest debut of all Shrek sequels as the fourth installment of the DreamWorks Animation franchise fell short of 2004's Shrek 2 ($108 million) and 2007's Shrek the Third ($121.6 million).
Last week's No. 1 movie, Iron Man 2, fell to second place with $26.6 million.
Robin Hood ($18.7 million), Letters to Juliet ($9.1 million) and Just Wright ($4.2 million) rounded out the top five, respectively.
