ARLINGTON, Va. — U.S. soccer star Charlie Davies was injured in a car accident early Tuesday that killed one, the Associated Press reports.
Davies was traveling with two people when the single-car accident happened around 3:15 a.m. along the George Washington Memorial Parkway in Virginia. Ashley J. Roberta, 22, of Phoenix, Md. was killed in the collision, while Davies and the other traveler were both transported to Washington Hospital Center Medstar for treatment.
Davies, 23, was listed in serious condition after undergoing a lengthy surgery following the accident. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, but U.S. soccer officials are still uncertain about the impact on the national team forward's career.
"At this point, we just don't know the extent of the injuries, so we can't comment on how this affects Charlie's future," U.S. Soccer Federation spokesman Neil Buethe told AP.
U.S. Park Police Sgt. David Schlosser said it was unclear who was driving the vehicle at the time of the crash, noting that the accident is still under investigation.
The U.S. team was in the Washington area to prepare for Wednesday night's World Cup qualifying game against Costa Rica.
