HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Karl Malden, the Academy Award-winning actor best known for his role on "The Streets of San Francisco," has died. He as 97.
Malden's death was confirmed Wednesday to The Associated Press after his family alerted the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences. Malden had previously served as the academy's president.
The role of Mitch in the 1951 classic "A Streetcar Named Desire" earned Malden an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.
Other notable films included "On the Waterfront," "Patton" and "One-Eyed Jacks," in which he starred alongside Marlon Brando.
However, Malden's most notable role was TV's "The Streets of San Francisco." He portrayed Detective Mike Stone in the 1970s hit, co-starring alongside Michael Douglas.
Like the recently deceased Michael Jackson, Malden was a native of Gary, Ind.
