LOS ANGELES — Taylor Swift scored six nominations while Michael Jackson followed close behind with five to lead the field of nominees for the 2009 American Music Awards, organizers announced Tuesday.
Both Swift and Jackson will compete for artist of the year at the Nov. 22 ceremony, along with pop star Lady Gaga, rapper Eminem and rock band Kings of Leon.
Jackson, who died on June 25 from acute propofol intoxication, was also nominated for favorite male artist and favorite album ("Number Ones") in both the pop/rock and soul/R&B categories. The music icon will be looking to add to his total of 22 American Music Awards racked up over the course of his career.
Swift, 19, was nominated for favorite female artist in both the pop/rock and country categories. Her latest studio release, "Fearless," is also up for favorite album in both categories. Swift also received a nod for favorite adult-contemporary artist.
Fans will once again select the winners through online voting conducted on the ABC Web site.
This 37th annual ceremony will take place at Nokia Theater L.A. Live in Los Angeles and be televised live on ABC.
