LOS ANGELES — The mystery surrounding Tiger Woods' middle of the night accident continues to top headlines after the golfer turned away authorities for the third straight day on Sunday.
The Florida Highway Patrol has been attempting to interview Woods about the accident, in which he crashed his 2009 Cadillac Escalade into a neighbor's tree around 2:25 a.m. on Friday. By law, he is only required to provide his driver license information, vehicle registration and current proof of insurance, which he has done.
On Monday, TMZ reported that authorities were seeking a search warrant for the golfer's medical records in order to investigate the treatment that he received following the accident just outside of his Florida home. The Web site said police are interested in finding out if the injuries Woods sustained resembled those from an auto accident or a domestic dispute with his wife, model Elin Nordegren.
When contacted by ESPN, a Florida Highway Patrol spokeswoman denied that the department had made any statements to anyone regarding Woods and warrants.
TMZ also said that authorities are interested in obtaining the surveillance video from the PGA star's home, which purportedly captures him leaving on the night in question.
The accident came two days after the National Enquirer published a story alleging that Woods has been having an affair with a New York woman named Rachel Uchitel. The tabloid claims Woods and Uchitel have had trysts in New York, Las Vegas and Australia, where he recently won the Australian Masters.
Woods posted a statement on his Web site Sunday in which he blamed himself for the accident, but said he would not be addressing any of the swirling rumors.
"This is a private matter and I want to keep it that way," he said. "Although I understand there is curiosity, the many false, unfounded and malicious rumors that are currently circulating about my family and me are irresponsible. The only person responsible for the accident is me. My wife, Elin, acted courageously when she saw I was hurt and in trouble. She was the first person to help me. Any other assertion is absolutely false."
