ORLANDO, Fla. — Tiger Woods has withdrawn from the upcoming Chevron World Challenge, citing injuries from Friday's car crash near his Florida home.
"I am extremely disappointed that I will not be at my tournament this week," the 33-year-old golfer said Monday in a statement posted on his official Web site. "I am certain it will be an outstanding event and I'm very sorry that I can't be there."
Woods was scheduled to hold a news conference Tuesday for the annual tournament at Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks, Calif., which benefits his Tiger Woods Foundation. The four-day tournament begins on Thursday.
In his statement, Woods said he would not compete again until next year.
The PGA star was injured when he crashed his 2009 Cadillac Escalade into a neighbor's tree around 2:25 a.m. on Friday. He was taken to Health Central Hospital, where he was treated for facial lacerations and released the same day.
The accident came two days after the National Enquirer published a story alleging that Woods has been having an affair with a New York woman named Rachel Uchitel. The tabloid claims that Woods and Uchitel met up as recently as this month in Australia, where he won the Australian Masters.
Woods posted a statement on his Web site Sunday in which he blamed himself for the accident, but said he would not be addressing any of the swirling rumors.
"This is a private matter and I want to keep it that way," he said. "Although I understand there is curiosity, the many false, unfounded and malicious rumors that are currently circulating about my family and me are irresponsible. The only person responsible for the accident is me. My wife, Elin, acted courageously when she saw I was hurt and in trouble. She was the first person to help me. Any other assertion is absolutely false."
