NEW YORK — Former NBC News anchor Tom Brokaw and his wife, Meredith, escaped injury Friday when they were involved in a deadly accident on a New York City highway.
According to the Associated Press, the couple was traveling in the left lane on the Bruckner Expressway when an SUV driver lost control of her vehicle in the right lane. Moments before, Brokaw said he saw spool of cable bouncing along the highway in the SUV's path.
The unidentified woman was thrown from the SUV and killed after her vehicle slid into the middle lane, forcing a mail truck in front of Brokaw's car.
Brokaw's vehicle wound up sliding into the median and colliding with the mail truck, however he and his wife avoided injury.
After the accident, Brokaw said he and his wife were "greatly saddened by this loss of life."
Brokaw, 69, held the role of NBC News anchor from 1982 to 2004.
