HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Toy Story 3 easily remained the top film in the country on a weekend that proved Tom Cruise has lost his edge.
The third installment of Disney's Pixar Animation franchise remained the No. 1 film with $59 million in its second weekend, according to studio estimates Sunday.
Grown Ups, starring Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Chris Rock, David Spade and Rob Schneider, had a strong $41 million debut to finish in second place.
Coming in a distant third at $20.5 million was Knight and Day, which reunited Cruise with Cameron Diaz for the first time since 2001's Vanilla Sky. It was the worse opening for a Cruise action flick in 20 years, signaling he still has a ways to go after some erratic behavior in recent years.
"He's one of the biggest stars of all time, but no question, this has impacted him," said Paul Dergarabedian, box-office analyst for Hollywood.com. "It's not like it's irrevocable or unchangeable. Look at all the stars who have been jailed or caught in compromising sexual situations and then came back. Many stars do recover. It just may take a lot of time for him."
The Karate Kid ($15.4 million) and The A-Team ($6 million) finished fourth and fifth, respectively, to round out the weekend top five.
