NEW YORK — Kanye West didn't walk away with any major awards, but he still managed to steal the show at Sunday night's 2009 MTV Video Music Awards.
The controversial hip-hop star jumped up on stage while Taylor Swift was making her acceptance speech for best female video, taking the mic from the young star to protest Beyoncé Knowles not winning the category.
"Taylor, I'm really happy for you, and I'm gonna let you finish, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time," he said as a shocked crowd, including Knowles, looked on.
West, who has a history of outbursts at award shows, later took to his blog to issue an apology to Swift.
"I'm sooooo sorry to Taylor Swift and her fans and her mom," he wrote. "... I'm in the wrong for going on stage and taking away from her moment!"
Swift later had her moment when Knowles invited her onstage to finish her acceptance speech. At the time, Knowles was picking up the night's top honor for video of the year.
