HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Mackenzie Phillips shared a secret that she's kept hidden for 31 years when she appeared on Wednesday's "Oprah Winfrey Show."
For 10 years, the former "One Day at a Time" child star says she had a sexual relationship with her father, rock legend John Phillips of the Mamas and the Papas.
In her new tell-all book "High on Arrival," Phillips reveals that she had sex with her father the night before her 1979 wedding to Jeff Sessler, a member of the Rolling Stones entourage.
"I woke up that night from a blackout to find myself having sex with my own father," Phillips read aloud from her book. "I don't remember how it started or, thankfully, how it ended. … Was it the first time? Had this happened before? I didn't know and I still don't. All I can say is that it was the first time I was aware of it. For a moment I was in my body, in that horrible truth, and then I slid back into a blackout. Your father is supposed to protect you. Your father is supposed to protect you, not f*** you."
"You often hear on television people say, 'It's shocking,'" said Winfrey. "And, in this case, I would have to say it really is."
