UDINE, Italy — Madonna paused for a moment during her concert in Italy last night to pay tribute to the two men who died earlier in the day while constructing her stage in France.
The workers died when the roof of Madonna's "Sticky and Sweet" tour stage collapsed during set-up for her show Sunday at the Velodrome Stadium in Marseilles.
"Before I continue the show I just wanted to take a moment to acknowledge and pay tribute to two people who lost their lives today," she told the crowd at Fruili Stadium in Udine. "You may have heard of it... When they were building my show in Marseille, where we're playing next — we don't know why, but one of the cranes fell... Two men lost their lives, which is a great tragedy to me."
"I feel so, so devastated to be in any way associated with anyone suffering," she added. "Let's all just take a moment to say a prayer for Charles Criscenzo and for Charlie Prow... Our hearts go out to their familes and loved ones... We are all so blessed and lucky to be alive."
Sunday's show in France was cancelled following the tragic accident.
