HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — "Monsters vs. Aliens," the latest animated feature from DreamWorks, raced to the top of the weekend box office, according to studio estimates released Sunday.
The action comedy, in which creatures from 1950s flicks take on invading extraterrestrials, opened with sales of $58.2 million, making it the largest debut so far this year.
The film easily outlasted "The Haunting in Connecticut," which debuted with ticket sales of $23 million to finish second.
"Monsters vs. Aliens" features a star-studded cast, including Reese Witherspoon, Kiefer Sutherland, Hugh Laurie, Seth Rogen, Paul Rudd, Will Arnett, Rainn Wilson and Stephen Colbert.
