HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — In his new film, "Definitely, Maybe," Ryan Reynolds stars as a soon-to-be-divorced political consultant who is forced to answer some hard questions from his 11-year-old daughter about his past relationships. Which, of course, opens the door to asking questions about the actor's own past relationships, including his very first love.
"It was Ariel, in high school," the 31-year-old Reynold, whose latest film opens tomorrow, tells Parade magazine. "I was just head over heels for her. She gave me a smooch behind the dumpsters outside of shop class. Unfortunately, she smoked these herbal cigarettes so it was literally like kissing a bucket of dirt. It was awful."
While that was many years ago, the Canadian-born actor, who rose to fame in the TV sitcom "Two Guys and a Girl," says he's also been disappointed by love on screen too. He says that when was cast in the film "Fireflies in the Garden," which will be released later this year, he became excited about the possibility of an on-screen romance with co-star Julia Roberts, but he was soon let down.
"I was so excited until I found out the scenes I have with her are when she's playing my mother," he says. "I was like, 'Couldn't we have a hot romance instead?' It's so sad. I have to tell my friends that I'm getting to act with the old Julia Roberts."
Despite the romantic letdown, Reynolds couldn't avoid praising his fellow co-star.
"Julia is such a class act," he says. "She's iconic for a very good reason. It's just so smooth, how she comes to the set and how she works. It looks incredibly effortless. She's just a classy lady."
In real life, Reynolds has found love in the name of 23-year-old actress Scarlett Johansson. The pair have been dating since last year, when Reynold's relationship with singer Alanis Morissette ended. Reynolds and Johansson have been dodging engagement rumors of late, but the actor says the past will lead him in the right direction.
Said Reynolds: "You have different loves before you settle down with that one person who really kind of rings your bell."
