The ultimate golden girl has gone platinum! Kirsten Dunst debuted her much lighter and brighter hair hue in London Wednesday, leaving her sunny, California-girl blonde strands behind for something a little edgier.

Dunst is no stranger to big hair color change-ups. She’s been a redhead for Spider-Man and a brunette for Mona Lisa Smile, but it’s been years since she went this blonde — ordinarily she sticks to her dirty-blonde, low-lighted waves. Her new look makes her look a little sassier and more urban, and, according to the upcoming edition of the New York Times, is squarely on-trend.

“It’s about making yourself unusual,” Sally Hershberger Downtown colorist Aura Friedman is quoted as saying. “It’s always fun to have that unicorn in a group of people.” The article lists celebs whose platinum looks tend to get cited as inspiration, including Gwen Stefani, Michelle Williams and Miley Cyrus — and notes that maintenance on such a high-impact shade can be intense. But for the moment, Dunst seems to be enjoying her summer-ready shade.
