NEW YORK — Howard Stern returned to the airwaves Monday after a holiday hiatus, but the host was still reeling from a key member of his staff missing from the show.
While he refused to discuss what landed Artie Lange in the hospital over the weekend, Stern was more than willing to praise his sidekick's contributions to the program over the years.
"We all have our demons," said Stern, referring to Lange's notorious gambling and substance abuse problems. "Artie has given this show tremendous moments of great comedy. He's a tremendous contributor. He is a good man. Don't forget how great he is."
"[He] is the most loving guy, always giving," added co-host Robin Quivers.
Lange, 42, has been missing from Stern's satellite radio show since early December. The MADtv alum has also canceled several recent stand-up gigs, including a New Year's Eve engagement at the Borgata Casino in Atlantic City. His rep confirmed over the weekend that he had been hospitalized, but requested privacy as Lange deals with his undisclosed health problem.
According to his website, Lange's upcoming performances in late January and February have also been called off.
Stern said he planned to pay tribute to Lange later this week with a compilation of show highlights. He also shot down rumors that he's off the show for good and will be replaced by fellow comedian Jim Breuer.
"Absolutely false," said Stern. "I don't know where that comes from."
Lange's 2008 book Too Fat To Fish made the New York Times bestseller list.
