LOS ANGELES — Betty Suarez and the Mode magazine staff have joined the growing ranks of the unemployed.
Ugly Betty has been canceled by ABC after four seasons on the air, the network announced Wednesday.
"We've mutually come to the difficult decision to make this Ugly Betty's final season, and are announcing now as we want to allow the show ample time to write a satisfying conclusion," executive producer Silvio Horta and ABC president Stephen McPherson said in a joint statement. "We are extremely proud of this groundbreaking series, and felt it was important to give the fans a proper farewell."
The hour-long comedy, based on the groundbreaking Colombian telenovela Yo Soy Betty La Fea, premiered in September of 2006. In addition to America Ferrera as Suarez, the cast includes Eric Mabius, Tony Plana, Ana Ortiz, Judith Light, Becki Newton, Michael Urie, Mark Indelicato, Daniel Eric Gold and Vanessa Williams.
During its run, Ugly Betty has been awarded Emmy, Golden Globe, Peabody, NAACP, ALMA and Imagen awards and earned 19 Emmy nominations.
