HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Mary-Kate Olsen may have gained fame as a child star, but it's a time that still brings back some painful memories.
"I look at old photos of me, and I don't feel connected to them at all," the 24-year-old Olsen, who rose to fame with her twin sister Ashley on Full House, tells Marie Claire. "I would never wish my upbringing on anyone...but I wouldn't take it back for the world."
Olsen refers to her and her sister as "little monkey performers" when they shared the role of Michelle on the hit ABC sitcom from 1987 to 1995. Like many child stars, she has experienced her share of challenges over the years, including an eating disorder and a hard-partying lifestyle.
"I think it's really important to be able to talk when something's wrong," she says of her willingness to seek help when need be. "I learned at a really young age that if you don't talk about it, it can drive you insane."
Today, Olsen and her sister devote most of their time to pursuing their love for fashion. The bohemian star loves designing for her mix of labels — from The Row to her and Ashley's lower-priced Olsenboye line for JC Penney.
"Sometimes Ash and I have to bring each other back, or push each other more," she says. "It's really helpful to have another half; we're constantly checking in with each other."
So is she completely against a return to Hollywood?
"I still read scripts, and if something great comes along, that's great … but this is my day job," says Olsen. "The Row is where I go every day."
