HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Ricky Martin is now the proud father of twin boys, who were born in recent weeks via a surrogate mother.
"The children, delivered via gestational surrogacy, are healthy and already under Ricky's full-time care," the 36-year-old singer's rep said in a statement to The Associated Press. "Ricky is elated to begin this new chapter in his life as a parent and will be spending the remainder of the year out of the public spotlight in order to spend time with his children."
The rep did not provide any further details on the Grammy-winning singer's children.
The Puerto Rican star first rose to fame as a member of the Latin boy band Menudo. In the early '90s, he launched a solo career, which has included such hit tracks as "Livin' la Vida Loca" and "She Bangs."
Martin, who was rewarded with a Hollywood Walk of Fame star last year, has long fought rumors about his sexuality. While he has refused to address those rumors, he did admit to desiring a family in an interview with TV's Extra last year.
"Of course I want to create a family," he said. "It will be my priority next year."
