The handsome Irish singer, whose hit song “Take Me To Church” is currently all over the radio and was recently nominated for a Grammy for Song of the Year, is known for his luscious curly locks and perfect man-buns, but a few years ago he sported much shorter locks — and actually looked totally different.

Still super cute, but we prefer him with his musician’s scruff and scragglier hair — it just goes better with his bluesy, rootsy sound. (At one point when he was younger, producers wanted to actually turn him into a pop singer. But “I wasn’t comfortable with it,” he tells PEOPLE.)
Hozier, who’s currently on a sold-out U.S. tour, also recently told PEOPLE that while his newfound fame is completely surreal, it’s also been amazing. “Fame is a funny word and a funny concept, but it’s exciting and energizing,” he says. “This is a dream. It’s part of everything I want to do with my life. I’ve just now learned to get my heard around what’s happening, and enjoy it.”
