HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — He may be known as one of Hollywood's funniest, but Will Ferrell says he's had his share of failures over the years, including his first shot at stand-up.
"I totally bombed," the 41-year-old actor reveals to Parade magazine. "I had the typical experience when all the moisture leaves your mouth. I kept licking my upper lip because it stuck to my teeth. I asked friends in the audience, 'How did I do?' They said, 'You were funny, but you have this bad tic. You do this thing where you lick your lip a lot.'"
Ferrell, whose latest comedy, "Step Brothers," opens in theaters Friday, confesses that one of his biggest failures for a laugh was the night of his marriage proposal to his now wife, Swedish actress Viveca Paulin.
"I took her to an undisclosed location, blindfolded her, put her in the trunk of a car and said, 'Do you want to marry me?' She goes, 'No.' But then I pursued her doggedly for seven years and then she finally said 'yes' — maybe because I wrote her over 10,000 letters while I was in prison," he jokes.
Ever since, Ferrell says Paulin seems to have "lost her sense of humor." Still, the couple did manage to get married in 2000 after meeting five years earlier in an acting class.
Now a proud parent to two sons, Magnus, 4, and Mattias, 1, the USC graduate says he has plenty of good parenting advice for anyone willing to listen.
"Don't let them play in old abandoned refrigerators," he jokes. "Let's see, what else? If you're flying with your children, it's better to book them on the same flight as you and not on a separate one just so they can have more leg room or something. Travel as a family."
