LONDON — Christian Bale was arrested Tuesday for allegedly assaulting his own mother and sister prior to last night's U.K. premiere of "The Dark Knight."
According to Britain's The Sun newspaper, the 34-year-old actor allegedly lashed out at his mother Jenny, 61, and sister Sharon, 40, on Sunday night. The incident is believed to have taken place inside Bale's suite at the Dorchester Hotel in London.
"A 34-year-old man attended a Central London police station this morning and was arrested in connection with an allegation of assault. He currently remains in custody," a police spokeswoman told The Sun.
Bale was reportedly allowed by police to attend last night's red carpet event. He voluntarily went to police headquarters this morning, where he was arrested and questioned.
Following his arrest, Bale's attorneys released a statement denying the assault allegations.
"Christian Bale attended a London police station today, on a voluntary basis, in order to assist with an allegation that had been made against him to the police by his mother and sister," the star's attorneys said. "Mr. Bale who denies the allegation, co-operated throughout, gave his account in full of the events in question, and has left the station without any charge being made against him by the police. At this time, there will be no further comment by Mr. Bale."
Bale's mother and sister both confirmed that an "incident" had taken place, but refused to provide any details.
"It is an extremely sensitive situation. There is nothing more I can say," his sister told London's Daily Telegraph.
"Yes, I was there, and yes, there was a family situation, but the police are handling it and I cannot say anymore at the moment," his mother told the paper.
"We didn't call the police to the scene. I can't say anymore, but we didn't call the police," she added.
Bale's "Dark Knight" shattered box-office records over the weekend as it debuted by taking in $158.4 million. That figured surpassed Hollywood's previous best opening weekend of $151.1 million set last year by "Spider-Man 3."
"It's wonderful! But I'm not a business man. I just enjoy doing what I do and whatever happens after that is gravy," Bale told Us Weekly Monday night of the numbers.
"I hope people are as excited about the movie as I am," he added. "The good thing is I don't feel like a con-man — the movie really does live up to the hype."
