It’s a challenge to make your makeup last during these hot, melting summer months. But if anyone knows how to create a glam look that’ll stay put, it’s the world-famous Rockettes, who opened their new show the New York Spectacular this week. Each Rockette does her own hair and makeup before they step on stage — up to 10 shows per week per Rockette — so it’s safe to say they’ve mastered how to make their makeup last through an entire performance, especially while sweating, under bright lights and even dancing in sync through a rain shower (it’s true!).
In fact, they’re such pros that some of the Rockettes can do their full hair and makeup routine in 15 minutes flat. So, what are their secrets to staying sweat-free with a smile? We went backstage at Radio City Music Hall and into their official dressing room to find out for our “How It’s Done” video series.
To start, primer is a must. The ladies apply a cream formula to their sweatiest areas, like the T-zone and cheeks, before applying foundation all over (they love Make Up For Ever’s Ultra HD Foundation), followed by concealer on any problem areas. A light layer of translucent powder locks everything in place. Then, they rely on a swipe of bronzer and a bright blush on their cheeks for a warm complexion.

Next, they focus on their eyes, first by amping up their lashes with a strip of falsies, and then by lining their top lids with a thin damp brush and black eye shadow, which they say stays in place longer.
However, the iconic Rockette look wouldn’t be complete without their signature red lip. To make sure it doesn’t budge, each Rockette applies an outline of lip liner at the edges of their lips before their lipstick of choice (usually MAC Ruby Woo). Then, they finish the look with a side bun, and to the stage they go!
For all of the details on how to get the look, watch the video above. And go see the New York Specatcular, running now through August 7th in New York City!
