HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Jerry Seinfeld is returning to his old NBC stomping grounds as the producer of a new reality comedy series about marriage, the network announced Thursday.
The new show, which is tentatively titled "The Marriage Ref," will feature real-life couples in the midst of a classic marital spat. A team of celebrities, comedians and sports stars will serve as the "judge" by offering their insight into the issue and making suggestions for a resolution.
"This is not a therapy show, it's a comedy show," said the 54-year-old Seinfeld in a statement. "After nine years of marriage I have discovered that the comedic potential of this subject is quite rich."
Ellen Rakieten, a 23-year veteran of "The Oprah Winfrey Show," is joining Seinfeld on the project, in which a premiere date has yet to be established.
"It will be revealing, edgy, controversial and very, very funny," Rakieten said of the show.
It is not yet known whether Seinfeld will actually appear in the series. He has maintained a relatively low profile ever since his hit sitcom, "Seinfeld," went off the air in 1998 after nine seasons on NBC.
