HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Clay Aiken says the “first decision” that he made as a father was to tell the public that he’s gay.
“I cannot raise a child to lie or to hide things,” the born-again Christian singer reveals in the latest issue of People. “I wasn’t raised that way, and I’m not going to raise a child to do that.”
The 29-year-old Aiken, who welcomed son Parker last month, confirms that his pride and joy was born via in vitro fertilization with his good friend Jaymes Foster, who is the daughter of music mogul David Foster.
“I have no idea if he’ll be gay or straight,” the former “American Idol” star tells People of his son. “It’s not something I’ll have anything to do with, or that he’ll have anything to do with. It’s already probably up inside the code there … No matter what the situation you’re in, if you’re raised in a loving environment, that’s the most important thing.”
Aiken confesses that he first told his mother about his sexuality four years ago. They were driving in the car at the time, shortly after dropping off his younger brother, who was being deployed to Iraq.
“She started crying. She was obviously somewhat stunned. But she was very supportive and very comforting,” Aiken recalls.
“She still struggles with things quite a bit, but she’s come a long way,” he adds.
