HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Morgan Freeman and his wife, costumer Myrna Colley-Lee, are divorcing after 24 years of marriage.
Freeman’s attorney and business partner, Bill Luckett, tells Access Hollywood the couple has been split for some time.
“For legal and practical purposes, [Freeman and Colley-Lee] have been separated since December of 2007,” he said.
The news comes just days after the 71-year-old actor was seriously injured in a car accident while traveling on a rural highway in Mississippi.
At the time of Sunday night’s crash, Freeman was traveling with a woman identified as Demaris Meyer, who has been classified as a friend. Their vehicle went off the road and rolled over several times before coming to a stop.
Emergency crews used the jaws of life to remove Freeman and Meyer, who were both airlifted to the Regional Medical Center in Memphis, Tenn.
“He has a broken arm, broken elbow and minor shoulder damage but he is in good spirits,” the Oscar-winning actor’s rep, Donna Lee, said in a statement Monday. “He is going to have surgery this afternoon or tomorrow to correct the damage. He says he’ll be okay and is looking forward to a full recovery.”
Freeman, who lives in Mississippi, won an Academy Award for the 2004 film “Million Dollar Baby,” in which he starred alongside Hilary Swank and Clint Eastwood. Other notable film credits include “The Shawshank Redemption,” “Driving Miss Daisy” and the current box-office smash “The Dark Knight.”
