Born in San Luis Obispo, Calif. and raised in nearby Arroyo Grande, Zac Efron took his first steps toward acting at the age of 11 when his parents noticed his singing ability. Singing lessons soon led to an appearance in a production of "Gypsy" that ran for 90 performances and he was hooked.
After appearing in such stage productions as "Peter Pan," "Auntie Mame," "Little Shop of Horrors" and "The Music Man," Efron started to land guest parts on several television shows, including "Firefly," "ER," and "The Guardian."
In 2004, Efron landed his first notable role when he joined the cast of the short-lived WB series "Summerland," starring as the girl-crazy Cameron Bale.
Two years later, Efron starred in the Disney Channel original movie "High School Musical" as Troy Bolton, the popular basketball team captain. The movie was an incredible success and launched Efron to stardom.
In 2007, Efron's notoriety would grow even further when he starred as Link Larkin in the film adaptation of the hit Broadway musical "Hairspray."
