LOS ANGELES — Robert Pattinson may have gotten cozy with Kristen Stewart over the weekend, but the British actor insists that he’s completely single.
“I don’t have a girlfriend,” the 23-year-old star told Britain’s Daily Mirror just days before the “Twilight” co-stars were photographed together at a Kings of Leon concert in Vancouver, Canada. “I don’t know why.”
The two stars were also nearly inseparable as they dined on sushi Saturday night with their fellow cast and crew members from the “Twilight” sequel “Eclipse” at the Japanese restaurant Miku. However, Pattinson claims his dating life hasn’t kicked into high gear as much as he thought it would.
“You always think you’re going to get more girls after you’ve made a movie and it never happens,” he tells the Mirror. “You sit there and you’re like, ‘I’m a big movie star and I want to go out with some models,’ but I don’t know why that doesn’t happen.”
Pattinson, who says he doesn’t really “have a type,” calls the dating scene in Los Angeles a bit of a challenge.
“Most of the women there are actresses and by default that makes them a little bit nuts — not that that’s a bad thing,” he says. “Whenever I get asked who my favorite celebrity crush is, I have no idea.”
When it comes to the mob scenes that surround him in public, Pattinson admits that he’s always felt “uncomfortable in crowds.”
“Most of the girls are all pretty young, so it’s just kind of funny. But then you get the ‘Twilight’ Mums who love you like mums! And you can take that too far. I mean, it could be ‘Edward breaks up ‘Twilight’ family.’ “
Pattinson says he always tries to accomodate his fans, but sometimes their requests go a little too far, such as when they ask him to bite their neck.
“I have to tell them: ‘Look, I can’t I’m afraid, because it will hurt,’ ” he says with a laugh.
The former child model says he originally had his sights set on a political career, until he landed a role in another blockbuster franchise, “Harry Potter.” Still, his initial casting in “Twilight” wasn’t originally well-received by fans of the book series, who complained he wasn’t sexy enough.
“I always looked like a girl up until a few years ago, and because I never did any sports or anything I was always kind of gangly,” he says. “I was never really a good model. I was terrible at it. I wasn’t skinny enough to be a little waif and I didn’t want to work out to be a beefy guy, so I was always stuck between two things and so I never got any jobs.”
