LOS ANGELES — Dennis Hopper is taking a break from his career after being diagnosed with prostate cancer.

The 73-year-old actor is currently seeking treatment under a special program at the University of Southern California, his manager, Sam Maydew, told the Associated Press.

“We’re hoping for the best,” Maydew said of the prognosis.

Hopper’s cancer treatment forced him to cancel an appearance at “Dennis Hopper and the New Hollywood,” an exhibition of his photography taking place at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image in Melbourne.

On Sept. 30, Hopper fell ill with flulike symptoms and stomach trouble while he was in New York City to promote his Starz television series Crash, based on the 2004 Oscar-winning film of the same name. The hospital stay led to the veteran star canceling several interviews and appearances, including a visit to Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.

During his distinguished career, Hopper has received Oscar nominations for the films Easy Rider and Hoosiers. Other notable movie credits include Apocalypse Now and Blue Velvet.
