LOS ANGELES — Michael Jackson’s much-hyped concert movie won the weekend box office with sales of $21.3 million, according to studio estimates released Sunday.
This Is It earned an estimated $101 million worldwide in its first five days, including $10.4 million in Japan.
The concert film, which opened in 99 countries Tuesday and Wednesday, offers fans a rare, behind-the-scenes look at Jackson as he rehearsed for his sold-out concerts that would have taken place over the summer at London’s O2 Arena. The film is drawn from more than one hundred hours of behind-the-scenes footage, featuring Jackson as he rehearsed for his comeback shows in the weeks before his death in June.
The planned two-week limited run for This Is It has now been extended through Thanksgiving, the film’s distributor said.
Last week’s top movie, the-budget horror hit Paranormal Activity, slipped to No. 2 with $16.5 million.
Law Abiding Citizen ($7.3 million), Couples Retreat ($6.1 million) and Saw VI ($5.6 million) rounded out the weekend top five, respectively.
